I bought this product in May and I have had to repair splits in the wood three times and it has gotten so bad that it is irreparable. For the price of this I think it should have lasted much longer. I thought my last feeder was bad because it only lasted 3 years. The wood they use in this feeder is very soft and splits where the screws go through. I like the screen and hanger but it just doesn’t hold together. Much seed was being wasted with my other feeder.
Not any waste to speak of with this one and easy to clean. I cut a hole in a plastic garbage can top and put it just above the hook on the feeder. This keeps it dry in all but a hard rain. Took the birds a couple of weeks to get used to the new set up. I read all of the reviews, looked at the product, and decided to take a chance.. Usually I look simple products and think that I could do that myself and save money.
I have a wooden frame and screen. But there is no way that we could reproduce the sturdy quality ourselves. We like large surface feeders that attract the cardinal size birds and this fills the bill but I’ve also noticed that our smaller nuthatches and finches are using it also. This comes with sturdy legs so there is an option of using it just off the grass and I used it that way for the last part of the winter.
We moved it up into a tree recently and are enjoying the strong hanger.

The removeable tray makes it easier to clean. We painted the wood green with Protek Eco Shield to give extra protection. This wood paint is very wildlife friendly and it looks great. I purchased this platform feeder to replace one from Wild Birds Unlimited that had rotted out after about 20 years of use, including being left out during Chicago area winters.
The new one is made out of unseasoned wood, which probably won’t last 5 years. My husband rubbed on several coats of his favorite wood dressing one part turpentine, one part vinegar and one part neatsfoot oil , in hopes that this will extend the life a bit. I like the easily removable mesh tray, as this will make cleaning easier.
I took off the legs, which would just get in the way. I couldn’t get the unit to hang horizontally from my old pole, so I pulled off the thin plastic-covered wire hangers that came with the new unit and replaced them with the chain from my old platform feeder.
The media could not be loaded. The birds love to get in the feeder to find their food, and no waste if it rains because the water goes thru the screen instead of ruining the birdseed. The black metal stands just hang down which our deer can reach and poke and push it so the seeds fall to the ground. Wish the black metal legs would fold easier especially for the price I paid.
